Repair or replace?
Replacing a submersible pump means pulling the pump, pipe, and wire up out of the well. It's real work, so a good contractor will first make sure the problem isn't something simpler above ground. Replacement is usually the right call when:
- The pump motor tests as failed (open or shorted windings, or a seized motor)
- The pump runs but no longer delivers enough water or pressure, and the tank, switch, and plumbing check out
- The pump is older and has needed repeated repairs
- Your household's water needs have changed and the existing pump is undersized
Getting the size right
A pump that's too small can't keep up. One that's too big can cycle hard and waste energy. Contractors size pumps from factors like:
- Well depth and water level, and how far the pump has to lift water
- Household demand: number of bathrooms, people, irrigation, and livestock watering
- Desired pressure range and whether you want a constant-pressure system
- Well yield: how fast the well can recharge
- Electrical supply: voltage and existing wiring
What's typically included in a pump replacement
Scope varies, but a replacement often includes pulling the old pump and inspecting the drop pipe, wire, and splices. It can also include installing the new pump and any needed check valves, then setting and testing the pressure switch and tank charge. Ask your contractor to spell out what's included, which parts are new, and what warranty applies to parts and labor.
What affects replacement cost
We don't list prices. The main factors are pump type and horsepower, well depth / pump setting, how much pipe and wire must be replaced, whether the pressure tank or switch is also replaced, constant-pressure controls, and access and urgency. Get a written quote before work begins.
Replacement & installation FAQ
How do I know if I need a new pump instead of a repair?
A contractor will usually rule out the pressure switch, control components, wiring, breaker, and pressure tank first. If the motor tests bad, the pump is badly worn, or it can't move enough water anymore, replacement is usually recommended. Age and repair history also play a role.
Should I replace the pressure tank at the same time?
Not always, but it's worth asking. A failing tank makes a pump short-cycle, which shortens its life. Many contractors check the tank's condition and air charge when replacing a pump.
What is a constant-pressure (variable speed) pump system?
Instead of switching on and off between two pressure settings, a constant-pressure system adjusts motor speed to hold a steady pressure. Homeowners often like the even shower pressure. Ask a contractor whether it suits your well and household.
Can I get a brand-new well drilled in Pahrump?
New domestic wells in the Pahrump Valley basin come with special requirements. In 2017 the Nevada State Engineer issued Order 1293, which generally requires relinquishing water rights before a new domestic well can be drilled. Check current requirements with the Nevada Division of Water Resources before you plan a new well. Only a state-licensed well driller can drill it.
